TOP TEN PICKS

The Making of Star Trek Book - Originally Published in 1968 and details the inner workings of the original Star Trek Series. Everything from casting, to ship design to Spocks ears is covered. This book was actually written while the show was still in production. It was the first really good book that detailed the making of a tv show. The myriad of "making of" books that followed it all find a basing in this initial ground breaking work. This book has been reprinted many many times. This serves as a testament to the book's quality and popularity. A must have for collectors, replicators and general Star Trek fans.

From Star Wars to Indiana Jones: The Best of the Lucasfilm Archive Book - Great closeup pictures of the props and costumes from the Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogies. Only a trip to the Smithsonian will give a person a more closeup view of the props and costumes of Star Wars than this book gives through its extensive arrays of pictures. Incredible reference and a truly interesting book to have.

Men, Makeup, and Monsters: Hollywood's Masters of Illusion and FX Book - Fangoria magazine editor Anthony Timpone interviews 12 of Hollywood's makeup effects masters responsible for many of hollywood's most memorable moments. From Tales from The Crypt to Night of the Living Dead, this book covers the methodology of makeup effects as well as the creative drive necessary to become a makeup effects artist. This book is for those eager to enter the profession of special effects makeup as well as those just curious about how truly memorable effects are pulled off. Very interesting book, the finest of its type.

No Strings Attached: The Inside Story of Jim Hensen's Creature Shop Book - a truly remarkable visual tour of Jim Hensens Creature shop. Over 300 color pictures detail Jim Hensen's numerous achivements in the areas of puppeteering and animatronics. From Dark Crystal to Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Jim Hensen's creature shop serves as the creative force behind many of hollywood's most memorable creature creations. This book describes in detail the setup and genuis behind this creative enterprise as well as provides breathtaking pictures of his past creations.

The Making of Starship Troopers Book - the movie lacked some of the basic principles of military logistics; ie no artillery, and no ground transports. But this film was down and dirty, guts and gore. It was mobile infantry at its best or rather its worst. It was weapons, it was props, it was costumes and so too is this book. This book features set sketches, and detailed information both visual and textual about the props and costumes that made this movie great.

The Making of Robocop VHS - Interesting behind the scenes retrospective on this now cult classic. I was unaware this existed until recently. Truly an interesting view of the special effects, people, and concept that made the Robocop movie legendary.

Robotech Perfect Collection Volume 1 - Not many people saw the Robotech saga when it first aired in syndication in select cities throughout the US in 1985. I only discovered this amazing animated saga a few years ago when it aired on a local cable channel. This videotape contains the first two episodes of Robotech in english as well as the corresponding episodes in japanese with subtitles. Robotech was created by masterfully editing three unrelated japanese cartoons into a single seamless saga of 85 episodes. Robotech as far as story and its ablity to spark interest, is the greatest Sci-fi saga of all time.

V the Original Mini-Series Video - not just a good Sci-fi video, Rather this is a thought provoking masterpiece that weaves political and social concepts into a preminent action adventure theme. In essence a work about alien occupation armies, citizen resistance, and the clever allure totalitarianism always has for the weak and the naive. This work's political statement and warnings are clearly relevant in the America of today with national computerized registries of new citizen arms purchases as well as terms of imprisonment for mere posession of many types of arms. With its dazzling special effects and incredible futuristic weapons V carries the battle for freedom to the battlefields of the air as well as the ground.

---Dr Who Revenge of the Cyberman - One of the best Dr Who episodes involving the classic robotic villians known as the Cyberman. In many ways the cyberman served as the basis for James Cameron's Terminator. Incredible tale with a great story and impressive visual effects. The Cyberman's costumes and weapons are immediately memorable. All of the cyberman and daleks videos from Dr Who are recommended and are listed below on this page.

The Making of Alien Resurrection Book -144 pages of pictures, pictures, and more pictures! A unique look at the making of this 4th aliens film. The book could use more written information about the effects and makeup. But overall a very good book, invaluable to collectors of Alien's items.

THE MAKING OF VIDEOS AND BOOKS

The Making of Robocop VHS - Interesting behind the scenes retrospective on this now cult classic. I was unaware this existed until recently. Truly an interesting view of the special effects, people, and concept that made the Robocop movie legendary.

This book features set sketches, and detailed information both visual and textual about the props and costumes that made this movie great.

The Making of The Lost World: Jurrassic Park Book - written by Cinefex magazine editor Jody Duncan. Cinefex is famed for their in depth coverage of the technical aspects of special effects and this book follows that path of informational excellence. The majority of the book focuses on the digital effects deployed to create the truly lifelike effects of the movies. Unfortunately that leaves little as far as prop information. A book more for general fans of the movie rather than inquisitive collectors of items from movies.

The Making of Lost in Space Book - Extensive information about the CGI effects deployed in this film. Pictures of the set and coverage of the various special effects shots used in the film.

The Making of Godzilla Book - Mostly features pictures from the movie rather than behind the scenes features. A good book for fans of the movie but most definitely not one of the greatest making of books ever made.
