Characters

Dorothy Gale played by Judy Garland

Dorothy is a small town girl in Kansas. Dorothy fears what a neighbor Miss Gulch will do to her dog Toto. In a dream like state Dorothy arrives in the Land of Oz. There along with her dog she encounters a Tin Man, a Cowardly Lion, and a Scarecrow that resembled people she knew at home. She also encounters a wicked witch and a desire more than anything to just get home.

Toto the Dog

Toto is Dorothy's dog back home. Toto is hated by Miss Almira Gulch, one of Dorothy's neighbors who threatens to hurt the dog. Little Toto is caught by Miss Gulch in her garden chasing her cat. When Dorothy arrives in Oz, the Wicked Witch of the West played by the same actress that played Miss Gulch takes it upon herself to try to harm the little dog as well.

The Scarecrow played by Ray Bolger

The Scarecrow is a strawman in a literal sense. He has no brain and even though he can walk and talk he is not much more than just a common scarecrow from Kansas.

The Tinman played by Jack Haley

This is a man of hard iron that lacks a heart. He can't feel emotions although he wishes he could. He is lanky and is in need of a good oiling for his joints. He carries a mighty axe which comes in handy in Dorothy's struggle with the Wicked Witch of the West.

The Cowardly Lion played by Bert Lahr

The Cowardly Lion is the King of the Forest and sings so all will know. The only problem with this king is he has no courage. Inspite of being the most powerful animal in the proverbial jungle he has no courage against anyone or anything. He constantly chews on his tail and twirls it nervously when he is tense.

Glenda the Good Witch of the West played by Billie Burke

Glenda serves as an oracle of sorts that sets Dorothy on her adventures through Oz. By following the yellow brick road Dorothy is instructed she will find her way to Oz.

The Wizard played by Frank Morgan

The Wizard is a powerful being of Oz with the knowledge to get Dorothy back to her home and her Auntie Em. The Wizard uses a smoke and mirror sort of routine to build up his powers beyond what they truly are. The Wizard at heart is no more than a tinkerer and inventor. He tries to take Dorothy home via a hotair balloon.

The Munchkins

The Munchkins are local residents of Oz. They fear the Wicked Witch of the West, and rejoice after they have proof of her death. Dorothy is their hero.

The Wicked Witch of the West played by Margaret Hamilton

This witch is upset at Dorothy because her arrival lead to the death of her sister. Dorothy is imprisoned in the witch's castle and rescued by her new found friends. Dorothy kills the witch by throwing water on her which causes her to melt.

The Witche's Winged Monkey Warriors

These smaller creatures are the aerial attack units of the witch. She uses them to carry off Dorothy to her castle.

The Witches Winkie Guards

The Winkie guards are larger troops utlized by the Wicked Witch of the Witch to defend her castle. They carry large pike like weapons. The picture on the left shows the Tinman, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow in Winkie Guard outfits from guards they just immobolized.

Auntie Em Gale played by Clara Blandick

Auntie Em is Dorothy's chief guardian. in Kansas. When Dorothy arrives in Oz all she can think about is getting back to her Auntie Em whom she greatly loves.

Professor Marvel played by Frank Morgan

Professor Marvel is a fortune teller Dorothy knows in Kansas. By utilizing a variety of tricks Professor Marvel appears to be able to read into the future. This character is the basis of the Wizard that Dorothy meets in Oz.

Miss Almira Gulch played by Margaret Hamilton

This is an old mean lady that doesen't like Dorothy or her dog. After spotting Dorothy's dog Toto in her garden and chasing her cat she feels the dog has to be stopped. She rides a bicycle and her bicycle is seen in the sky during the tornado that brings Dorothy to Oz. This woman Dorothy knew became the basis of the Wicked Witch of the West she later encountered. Instead of a bicycle the Wicked Witch road a broom.
